Coast of Rice Tour: Production.
It is OFFICIALLY the night before our production presentations back at Elon. We’ve been home for 9 days, and it’s been non-stop work since the wheels of our plane landed in Raleigh on the fifteenth.
Our trip was AMAZING. It opened my eyes to so much, and really made me realize how much I take for granted. This is something I’ve noticed before, and sadly, it’s something I’m sure I’ll notice again...

Going through footage from our trip for a promotional video and remembered this one. These plants are AWESOME. They collapse as a defense-mechanism…then get back up again.

C.R. Zero Hour.
Our last hours and minutes in Costa Rica are ticking away! It’s crazy how fast this trip has gone by. Feels like yesterday when we got here! (Sentimental tear moment…NOW.)
Anyway, we have to leave our hostel at 4 am, so a bunch of us are just staying up ALL NIGHT. My goal, in the next 6 hours, is to blog throughout this experience, and while I know I’ll feel like shit in the...

Something we say here: “We have more life than time.
– Victor, our tour guide here in Costa Rica. So true, in a “Stop This Train” kinda way.

Pura Vida.
“Pura Vida!”
It’s the motto of Costa Rica. I’m thinking it literally means, “For life!” or, “To life,” but they say it and mean it for EVERYTHING. I love it.
“No worries, man. Pura Vida, man. Everything is good.”
You hear this EVERYWHERE, and everybody is happy. Worried or scared about something? “Pura Vida.” Toasting on a special occasion? “Pura Vida!” About to jump off a 200-ft tree in the...

This is what a Banana Plantation looks like. Learned more about the fruit than I ever thought I would, but I definitely appreciate it more now. Guys who harvest have to work 5-5, carry 90 pound bundles, and watch out for snakes and tarantulas. Crucial…

Coast of Rice Tour. Day 00.
Yesterday was BUSY.
I started it off at the bright shiny hour of 6:30 and woke up to cars zooming by and trains honking their horns outside of my window of the hostel, but it was easy to get up because we’re in a new place and I was excited.
Before we left San Jose, we stopped at a bagel place and grabbed breakfast to go. They didn’t speak English (and shouldn’t be expected to, of course), so...

Coast of Rice Tour. Travel Day.
Holy GEEZ, it’s early, and OFFICIALLY Travel Day for Elon I-Media.
I woke up today dry-throated and puffy-eyed at 5:30 this morning. The only other day I wake up this early is Christmas. Whew. But I won’t complain…the Panama group is halfway to their destination after having to be at their bus at FOUR.
I can’t BELIEVE the trip is already here! Yesterday was a blur of...
Coast of Rice Tour Intro. (Working title)
First off, Happy 2011, everybody! I went off the grid for New Year’s and it was refreshing.
Fast-forward to TODAY, and I’m sitting in the Raleigh-Durham airport with my Elon I-Media class getting ready to fly out to Costa Rica for ten days. On the trip, we’ll be filming, taking photos, interviewing, reporting, and gathering content for a place called Earth University....
